American Cocker Spaniel

Country of Origin: The name Spaniel was known as long ago as 1328. General opinion is that this dog originated in Spain. Spaniels in America can be traced back to 1620 and the landing of the Mayflower. According to historical reports, the Mayflower carried two dogs, a mastiff and a spaniel.
Height: Males: 14 ½ to 15 ½; Females: 13 ½ to 14 ½
Weight: 20 - 25 lbs is average
Color:

There are three varieties. Black & Black & Tan, ASCOBS ( any solid color other than Black) buffs, reds, chocolates, and Parti-colors ( basically a white dog with markings of black, red, or brown spots)

Coat: On the head, short and fine, on the body, medium to long. The coat is silky, flat or slightly wavy. Excessive, curly, or cottony textured is not correct. Use of electric clippers on the back coat is not desirable.
Temperament:

The cocker should be friendly, outgoing, with no timidity. They are very needy of praise and affection. Cockers should not be hyper, or destructive. Given their own toys, they should be content.

Character: The cocker is a long lived, loving companion. They are very needy of affection, to give and to receive. They want to be with their master constantly when you are home.
Care: Cockers need a monthly trip to a professional groomer to stay clean and healthy. The face and top third of the ears (inside and out) , and under the tail need shaved with a #10 blade. The back coat needs stripped with a Mars 20 blade stripper. And the toenails and feet need trimmed. Weekly brushing by the owner can help keep the coat in it’s best condition.
Training: Cocker Spaniels are very trainable. They love to fetch and love treats and affection for performing.
Activity: Cockers do well indoors as lap dogs, or thrive in active performance, obedience training, and hunting as long as they with their owners.
Description:

The Cocker Spaniel is the smallest of the Sporting Group. The American Cocker is the long coated variety with a coat that often sweeps the ground. Besides it’s beautiful coat this dog has a superb domed head and a short muzzle and a constantly wagging tail.
