Collie

Country of Origin: The exact origin of the Collie is uncertain, but they have existed for centuries as herding dogs of Scotland and England
Height: 22 to 26 inches at the wither
Weight:

between 50 and 75 pounds

Color: Sable and White -- a fawn sable color of varying shades from light gold to dark mahogany

Tri-color -- predominantly black, carrying white markings as in a "Sable and White" and has tan shadings on and about the head and legs

Blue Merle --mottled or "marbled" color predominantly blue-grey and black with white markings as in the "Sable and White" and usually has tan shadings as in the "Tri-color"

White --predominantly white, preferably with sable, tri-color or blue merle markings

Coat: (Smooth Coats) has a short, hard, dense, flat coat of good texture, with an abundance of undercoat. (Rough Coats) Very abundant on the mane and frill. The face or mask is smooth. The forelegs are smooth and well feathered to the back of the pasterns. The hind legs are smooth below the hock joints. Any feathering below the hocks is removed for the show ring. The hair on the tail is very profuse and on the hips it is long and bushy
Character: Strong, responsive, active dog, carrying no useless timber, standing naturally straight and firm
Temperament:

These dogs have a great temperament; easily get along other dogs if properly socialized, wonderful with children and very tolerant.

Care: Smooth Coats and roughs need to be brushed on a regular basis. The smooth’s, maybe not so much, with the exception of season changes. The roughs have a very dense undercoat that needs to be groomed almost daily to keep the oils and mats away from the skin. Bathing a Collie is not so important as long as you brush and groom them regularly.
Training: Easily trained, highly intelligent and sometimes too clever. Their intelligence will sometimes surprise you.
Activity:

Very energetic and need lots of attention. They need a lot of room to run or be on an exercise program to keep them fit, both mentally and physically. People with very active lifestyles are more apt to the Collie.

Description:

The Collie was developed mainly for herding. Today, the Collie is used mostly for house companions and their herding skills are still in ranches and farms.
